Tips for Taking Care of Your Invisalign Trays

Invisalign® aligners are a great option for straightening teeth. As an alternative to traditional braces and their metal brackets and wiring, the Invisalign system uses clear, removable plastic aligners, which are custom-made to fit over your teeth.

Depending on what you need, aligners can be made for your top row of teeth, bottom row, or both. While your aligners need to be kept in your mouth for 22 hours a day for the best results, you can remove them to eat and drink.

At Westlake Smile Studio, Dr. Mimi Theerathada and her team are dedicated to providing you with the best smile possible. To help you on that journey, Dr. Theerathada has compiled this helpful guide for taking the best care of your Invisalign aligners.

Cleaning your Invisalign aligners

Cleaning your Invisalign trays is actually quite simple. All you need is a soft-bristled toothbrush and some unscented liquid soap. Then, with lukewarm water, brush your aligners inside and out.

When cleaning your aligners, make sure to use lukewarm water. If the water is too hot, it can alter their shape. After cleaning them, dry them thoroughly and put them back in your mouth. Try to thoroughly clean your aligners 1-2 times a day, or every time you brush your teeth.

If you don’t want to clean them this way, you can purchase Invisalign’s specialized cleaning system, which you can order through Invisalign’s website.

Maintain proper oral hygiene

Good oral hygiene is incredibly important when using the Invisalign system, because your teeth are essentially encased in your aligners for the majority of the day. Taking this into account, you’ll need to brush and floss thoroughly and regularly. This will help ensure that food particles don’t rot in between your aligners and your teeth, which could lead to foul odors and tooth decay.

Additionally, be sure to inspect your aligners for residue and buildup. Residue usually appears as a white substance. If you do not clean your aligners regularly, the residue may be difficult to remove. This is where the Invisalign cleaning system may come in handy. Soaking your aligners in the cleaning solution can be an effective and convenient way to keep your aligners clean and germ-free.
